Don’t miss Creativity Explored’s first group show of 2014, featuring some of the studio’s most talented and popular artists.

A Curious Menagerie is a group exhibition of artworks depicting various members of the animal kingdom, factual as well as fanciful, as viewed through the eyes of more than two dozen Creativity Explored artists. Encompassing everything from the domesticated to the wild and exotic, plus a few imaginary creatures, this show also comprises a range of media: watercolor, pastel, acrylic, pen and ink, wire, wood, paper, clay, fabric, and cardboard.

Artist Zachary Adams shows his love for “man’s best friend” in a winsome artwork of his own pet, entitled My Pretty Pepper Girl Dog, in oil pastel and ink text on paper. Christina Marie Fong contributes Bobcat Rabbit, a fanged, savage-looking bunny covered in ornate Indonesian-inspired patterns of gold and silver, using watercolor and metallic felt pen. Gerald Wiggins brings an anthropomorphic element into his Lizard Man and Jake, both glazed ceramic sculptures of half-man, half-animal creatures, dressed like urban hipsters complete with stitched jeans, modern caps and goatees.

Curated by Suda Changkasiri & Glenn Peckman.

Collaboration with the San Francisco Girls Chorus

In a concurrent animal-themed project supported by the Creative Work Fund, the San Francisco Girls Chorus (SFGC) has commissioned Creativity Explored artists to create 50 cut-out animal props for the chorus’ dramatic concert production of Noye’s Fludde (Noah’s Flood), a modern adaptation of a 15th-century mystery play, to be performed on Saturday, March 29 at Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco as the headliner for the SFGC’s 35thanniversary gala dinner and auction. These oversized artworks created by more than 20 artists represent a range of imaginative animals to be used as puppets, props and headdresses for the performance. At the auction, patrons will have the opportunity to bid on the original artworks used in the performance, with proceeds shared by Creativity Explored and SFGC; for more information, go to www.sfgirlschorus.org.

Prior to the March 29 performance and gala, Chorissimaan ensemble of 35 members of the SFGC, will perform French and Spanish songs a cappella during the opening reception for A Curious Menagerie on March 6.

Collaboration with the San Francisco SPCA

In yet another concurrent animal-themed project, the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SFSPCA) is hosting Dogs and Cats are Our Friends, a solo exhibition of Creativity Explored artist Yukari Sakura’s work at the Leanne B. Roberts Animal Care Center Gallery (www.sfspca.org). An animal lover her entire life, Sakura’s paintings express her concerns about the well-being of dogs and cats, climate change, endangered species, and good nutrition for everyone. The exhibition series is based on photographs that the artist took on a recent visit to the SFSPCA.  She also relied on memory and imagination to create paintings that depict dogs and cats in “elegant backgrounds.” Sakura hopes that these paintings will help to enlighten others to the plight of animals in need.
