JD Green works alongside workshop participants to demonstrate watercolor techniques.

To help provide support for Bay Area nonprofits, LinkedIn has launched InCommon, a space in their San Francisco office dedicated for local nonprofits to use for events, meetings, and programs at no cost! LinkedIn is featuring artwork from local nonprofit, Creativity Explored, with all of the proceeds going to their artists. This space serves as a vital connection point for Bay Area nonprofits to achieve their missions and better connect with LinkedIn and their Social Impact programs.

We are thrilled to be partnering with LinkedIn as a resident in their new InCommon Community Engagement Space. During our residency, we will be hosting a series of exhibitions of CE artwork for Linkedin staff, visitors, and the nonprofits that will utilize the space for meetings and special events.

We are excited to host a series of free artmaking pop-ups for the general public, giving you the chance to step into a satellite CE studio and create art with CE artists and teachers!

Join us for our next artmaking pop-up on Wednesday, November 13 starting at 12:00 pm. Drop in to participate in an artmaking activity lead by CE artists Joseph "JD" Green and Gerald Wiggins with Visual Arts Instructor Enrique Quintero. Preparing Guitar - Interactive Music Workshop & Performance

November 2, 2019
1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Venue
Creativity Explored

Location
3245 16th Street, San Francisco, CA 94103

A Prepared Guitar created by Matt Robidoux

Preparing Guitar is a workshop and performance-based exploration of identity in and through sound, inspired by Fragments + Resistance and the show’s recurrent musical themes, hosted by musician and founder of the Adaptive Instrument Ensemble, Matt Robidoux. Join us for this special and harmonic Imaginate Saturdays event!

This free and open to all abilities workshop and performance at the Creativity Explored 16th Street studio on Saturday, November 2, 2019, invites participants to create their own sound taxonomies and approaches for the prepared guitar alongside CE artists.

Participants will choose from and make their own objects for playing prepared guitar. We will provide some materials and guitars. Attendees are highly encouraged to bring their own instruments, guitars, and materials for creating their unique instrument but not required. Objects Robidoux regularly uses include rocks, shells, alligator clips, other guitar strings, ribbon, battery-powered fans, etc.

During the workshop, individuals will explore and catalog multiple uses for these objects, develop symbols or descriptive words for these taxonomies, and write compositions using them to be played by the group. At the end of the day, the group will join together to deliver an impromptu performance!

In Fragments + Resistance, on view at the Creativity Explored gallery through November 9, Joseph "JD" Green and John Iwaszewicz negotiate the implications of the silent instrument body. Preparing Guitar contrasts these considerations with individualized sonic objects, their approaches, and potential uses

Open to all ages and abilities.

Free and open to the public. RSVP via Eventbrite to confirm your attendance!

About The Prepared Guitar
The prepared guitar, a subsequent discovery to John Cage’s prepared piano, changes the instrument’s timbre – the fundamental tone composition of the sound. This is typically achieved by placing objects on or under the strings. The objects sometimes have a tone of their own, or can modify the acoustic properties of the instrument much like an electronic effect. The prepared guitar was pioneered by the likes of Keith Rowe and other free improvising guitarists of the 1960’s who developed “non-idiomatic” musical forms, which adhere to “characteristics established only by the sonic musical identity of the person or persons playing it,” explains author and guitarist Derek Bailey (Free Improvisation, 2008).  See Keith Rowe play his prepared guitar on Youtube here.

About the Adaptive Instrument Ensemble
Adaptive Instrument Ensemble (AIE) an all-abilities improvising group with emphasis on using iPads as motion tracking controllers for custom person-specific software instruments built through working closely with individuals in the ensemble.

Check out the video of Matt Robidoux and the AIE performing their prepared instruments below.
