Join us for the opening reception of Marilyn Wong: Catching Spirit, the first solo exhibition of work by Marilyn Wong.

In her over 30 year career, Marilyn Wong (b. 1949) has developed an exceptional artistic vision. The exhibition highlights the range and depth of Wong’s artistic practice with a focus on recent works on paper, from 2010 to the present.

Wong translates an enduring captivation with pop culture, from icons like Elvis to Prince to popular cinema, including 60’s Beach Party and martial arts films, into densely layered compositions, built with complex linework pulsing with vibrant color.

Wong has established her own visual vocabulary with elaborate systems of construction that are as intricate as they are enigmatic. With her compelling, singular style, Wong has developed an impressive body of work. When working in the studio, Wong’s momentum is unwavering. When the spirit moves her, she is a force to be reckoned with.

Wong joined the CE studio in 1985. Her artwork has been widely exhibited in a number of group exhibitions around the world, including  Art and Advocacy: To Be Developmentally Disabled (TBD) at the California Museum (Sacramento, 2017), Resonating Resonance at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (Japan, 2016), and Bay Area Now 7 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco, 2014). In 2018 Wong's work was featured in Mind Place, a group exhibition at the CE gallery, and most recently in 6 Women: Female Voices from Creativity Explored at the Marriott Stanton Hotel in South Beach, Florida.

Everyone Is A Creative” is a panel and art show, produced by The Context and The Assembly, which seeks to explore the elusive concept of creativity and how we can harness it to drive a project from ideation to execution.

The panel discussion features four creative female leaders and will focus on finding authentic creativity, putting it to use, finding purpose in a career, and overcoming creative blocks. The art show is comprised of 15 local female artists, including a handful of pieces from Creativity Explored. A portion of proceeds from art sales will go to Creativity Explored.

Panel discussion features: Shavone Carter (Music & Culture Communications in Tech, Curator, and Artist); Serena Dugan (Co-Founder of Serena + Lily and Studio Artist); Jeanine Celeste Pang (Creative Director at Old Navy); and Mary Finlayson (Studio Artist). The panel will be moderated by Megan O’Sullivan of The Context.

Tickets are available for $20.

About The Assembly
The Assembly is a community focused on physical and personal wellness. The Assembly is for those who want to grow together and feel good every single day. This sacred space is designed for us to come together, learn, and move in ways that build strength from the inside. Housed within the walls of a historic church, this group of creators, creatives, and passionate humans gathers every day.

The Assembly is a safe place to practice self-care, whether that means finding a solitary area to reflect, learning a new practice, or reaching out to build connections within the community. Our doors are open for you to come find out what it means and looks like to truly give yourself space.
