b. 1962, Shanghai
A true product of his native Shanghai, Andrew Li's most frequent subjects are cities in motion. From Li's quick-handed and deliberate process emerges a representation of how the eye reads the urban environment – how it latches onto certain details and summarizes others, making sense of all the dizzying activity on a busy street.
b. 1973, San Francisco
Elana Cooper is primarily known for her striking, large-scale floral silhouettes, though animals are also a common subject of her work. Cooper paints in bold strokes, the background in one color and the subject in a contrasting color, giving her representational work an abstract quality.
b. 1957, San Francisco, California
Evelyn Reyes worked at Creativity Explored from 2002 to 2017 and was known for her repeated abstract shapes in oil pastel on paper. Working on one specific shape at a time, her periods of abstract depictions included cakes, garbage cans, and carrots. With ritualistic reverence for each aspect of the process, Reyes’ art practice mirrored the repetition and order that were central to her daily life.
b. 1992
Corine Raper creates abstract works on paper, using pastel or paint to capture and emphasize the energy of her movement. Drawing or painting gestural lines, marks, and shapes, Raper approaches each paper with focused intensity. She plays with composition and density of color, taping down the paper so that she can draw or paint with both hands.
b. 1982, Mexico
Selene Perez is known for her vast bestiary of strong, graphic drawings of animals and emotive portraits. Ranging from seven-legged cats to flocks of geese in flight, Perez makes her creatures with the simplest of marks across an array of media. The influence of printmaking is evident in all of her work. Collectors are a fan of Perez’ ink blot swans and her portraits of Frida Kahlo, one of her favorite artists
b. 1981, Guangzhou, China.
Yang “Burrin” Yu-Zhen busies herself daily with intricate still life or portrait painting. Constantly examining and refining her technique—investigating color and spatial relationships, light sources, and shading—she is developing all the elements of an accomplished classical painter. But her loose, improvisatory work is as skillful.
