Quintin Rodriguez

b. 1971, San Francisco CE artist since 1999

Quintin Rodriguez creates expressive works no matter his medium. Favoring pencils, ink and watercolor, his precise line work compliments the graphic appeal of his subjects. He was interested in graffiti art in his youth and the jagged and raw lines in his art reflect this influence.

Rodriguez’s interest in graffiti art has spurred an interest in wordplay and text art. Merging together subjects and adverbs, Rodriguez carefully constructs compound words whose definitions are as playful as they are matter-of-fact. His series of original mash-up words are sometimes accompanied by fictional characters that illustrate or embody the word itself– Garfield the Cat, Tweety Bird, and Stewie from Family Guy have all made appearances.

A master of composition, Rodriquez spends a significant amount of time on each piece, carefully drawing from subject matter taken from photographs and printed material. Always planning, Rodriguez keeps a journal with new words and subjects he intends to render.
