Diane Scaccalosi
b. 1944, San Francisco ∙ CE artist from 1990 - 2014
Diane Scaccalosi is very proud of her Italian-American heritage and loves to talk to people about her memories of growing up in the city’s Italian community.
Though she has experimented with a variety of media over the years, Scaccalosi prefers the versatility and saturated colors of pastels and acrylic paint. Her artwork has evolved over time from being primarily figure-based to mostly abstract. Her older drawings which are crowded with expressive, egg-headed figures, have given way to looser paintings that still incorporate repetitive circular forms, but place more emphasis on color and composition. She began working on a very large scale in 2009, producing an immense, and beautiful, swirling abstract triptych for the Avalon at Mission Bay III residential development.

Whipper Snapper Nerd is an unexpected compilation of divergent artwork and writing created by ten Creativity Explored artists.
Originally appearing in the 1990s as small-edition photocopied zines produced by Fletcher and Meyer, each of the first eight issues was devoted to an individual artist, including Michael Bernard Loggins, James Miles, John Patrick McKenzie, Barbara Doehrman, David Jarvey, Andrew Li, Robert Margolis, and Diane Scaccalosi.
Celebrating the original 25th anniversary, this snappy compilation also includes excerpts from two new WSN zines featuring work by Gerald Wiggins and Christina Marie Fong.
Fletcher and Meyer also curated Whipper Snapper Nerd exhibitions at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and at Los Angeles and New York galleries. Featured artist have won recognition through exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Outsider Art Fair, and galleries around the world.
