Kaocrew “Yah” Kakabutra (b. 1989, Thailand) joined the Creativity Explored studio in 2011 after moving from Thailand to the US in 1997. Kakabutra communicates through her artworks and her loving, kind, and sociable personality.
Initially making small-scale works on paper, her mark making is as diverse as the media she works with. Repeated circular forms are made with colored pencil over a background mixture of acrylic and pastel. Alternately, Kakabutra delicately washes watercolors in flowing pastel shades.
Her willingness to experiment has led Kakabutra to projects that would overwhelm a less confident artist. Moving quickly from a small scale to an immense scale, she completed an astonishingly beautiful abstract painting that was featured in Cisco Home, a CE community arts partner. View the piece in a blog post here. During a Guest Artist workshop, Kakabutra created a large abstracted headdress made from fabric, batting, tree branches, beads, and string among other media.
Kakabutra was a featured in the highly acclaimed exhibition, Super Contemporary, on view at Creativity Explored April 30 through June 17, 2015 in which she collaborated with guest artist Maysha Mohamedi. Her works has been included in over four exhibitions at Creativity Explored and was featured at ArtPadSF at the Phoenix Hotel in 2012.
