Komorebi
July 10th - August 30th, 2025
Opening Reception: Thursday, July 10th, 6 to 8 pm
As sunlight streams through a tree’s canopy, the pattern projected onto the forest floor is defined by the countless tiny elements the light meets along the way: the particular shape of each leaf, their angle and distribution, the swaying of a gentle breeze, water droplets and airborne particles, insects, bird wings, spiderwebs and dust.
Komorebi, a Japanese word without direct English translation, describes the quiet beauty of light filtering through leaves. It invites the viewer to consider each ever-shifting moment, to see these patterns not as random and fixed compositions but as the result of a larger, unseen fluid structure.
The abstract works in this exhibition were created through the accumulation of many small, formal decisions. Each time an artist chooses a new color, mark, or layer, they are subtly influenced by an infinite number of tiny elements from their past experiences. The resulting patterns are filled with dappled light, softened edges, and irregular rhythms that, when seen together, give us a moment of clarity, quietness, and contemplation.
This group exhibition includes the work of Allura Fong, Taneya Lovelace, Samantha Mathews, James Nielsen, Mary Ann Orozco, and Karla Quinonez.
