Beth Zmerzlikar

1947 - 2013, Price, Utah CE artist from 2007 - 2013

Beth Zmerzlikar worked at both the 16th Street and Arkansas Street studios from 2007 until her death in 2013. Zmerzlikar deposited layers in methodical, overlapping folds of pastel or ink, rendering both figurative and abstract compositions. Controlled lateral markings carefully fill the striations, meeting to create wavering bands of darker shades, reminiscent of sedimentary material laid down in geologic time. The effect lends her work movement and dynamism as the color of the ground can be seen between these vigorous marks, and the energy of her hand can be felt moving through the surface.
