Detail of Josephine Baker Earthquake Thunder by Daniel Green © 2010 Creativity Explored Licensing, LLC, marker and colored pencil on wood, 23 x 14 inches

Daniel Green's first solo exhibiton.

Days of our Lives is the first solo exhibition of work by San Francisco native, Daniel Green, opening January 15, 2015. Green (b.1985) joined the studio on a full-time basis in 2008, and is one of the youngest artists working at Creativity Explored. Featured will be Green’s signature work that conveys an intense and playful fascination with American entertainment and popular culture. The exhibition will be on view through March 4, 2015.

Most of the works are drawings with ink on wood, in which Green meticulously catalogs text often incorporating imagery as well. His pieces feature figures from television, politics, sports, or history, and then carefully list dates, titles of shows and songs, cities, and names. Sometimes visible within the extensive listings are words like “Smile,” “Now Eric,” “Shut Up Gilles,” “No More Treasure Island Movin’ Back,” which reveal direct and personal commentary on his immediate environment and concerns.

Green’s process of methodically indexing his everyday life, American entertainment, and popular culture, combine in his work, I Have the Dream, Dr Martin Luther King Jr, 2014, 17.75 x 16 inches. While upon first glance the text may seem to be random, really the work is a way for Green to organize, archive, and process information from his day-to-day life. In this ink on wood, Green lists dates like “September 1987,” the names of TV channels like “KQED TV Channel 9 PBS,” and of a menu with prices such as “Turkey Burgers $6.00.” He also references the competitive fighting video game, Street Fighter by listing street fights that occur in the video game, such as “Ryu vs. E. Honda, New York City.” Green juxtaposes the text with images of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. not as a political statement, but rather a personal reflection. Green emphasizes the phrases “Be Yourself” and “I have the dream” in silver metallic ink as though reminders to himself. Infused with nuanced references, the work of Green demonstrates how to remain contemplative in the distraction of daily life.

Green's work was featured in several prominent exhibitions including Create, a traveling exhibition curated by Lawrence Rinder that originated at University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive in 2011, This Will Never Work at Southern Exposure, San Francisco, CA, in 2013, Outsider Artists, Oakland International Airport, Oakland, CA, in 2013, Faces at the Jack Fischer gallery, San Francisco, CA, in 2011.

They are full of holy...

Tricycle by Pablo Calderon © 2012 Creativity Explored Licensing, LLC, acrylic and marker on wood, 27.5 x 32 inches.

Exhibition of artwork by six veteran CE artists at the Arc Gallery, San Francisco.

Work from the Creativity Explored archives will be on view at the Arc Gallery, San Francisco, in They are full of holy..., a group exhibition highlighting the work of six artists who have worked in the studio for almost a decade or more. The selected artists have exhibited internationally and nationally and represent a diverse range of subject matter such as shoes, trucks, bikes, cakes, portraits, poetry, and personal experiences.

Laron Bickerstaff (b.1971), a studio artist at CE since 2007, is influenced by pop culture and brands. His love of brands translates into drawing through radiant and colorful renderings of shoes.

A CE studio artist since 2002, Pablo Calderon (b. 1952) is fascinated with forms of transportation creating elegant, vivid depictions of bicycles and large, bird’s-eye views of trucks flattened out into map-like abstraction.

Deceptively sweet, Camille Holvoet’s (b. 1952) work draws on remembrances of life’s anxieties and forbidden desires. Her luscious oil pastel drawings of cakes, pies, and pastries are an expression of her relentless introspection. Holvoet has been a CE studio artist since 2001.

Vincent Jackson (b.1961) is one of the most prolific and longest practicing artists at Creativity Explored working in the studio since 1984. In his oil pastel's of figures and faces, Jackson breaks the human form into geometric shapes filled with heavy impasto of layered color.

Text functions as the basis of of John Patrick McKenzie’s (b.1962) practice, and is used for both its visual and scriptural qualities. The crowding and shape of the closed and filled intricacies of his calligraphy add depth and material to the work, and allow it to serve simultaneously as a visual image and as poetry. McKenzie has been a CE studio artist since 1989.

A CE artist since 1988, James Miles (b.1957) is known for his ink drawings of miniature scenes that tell stories from everyday life. His miniature scenes unusually combine perspectives, blurring the limits of inside/outside, near/far, small/large, male/female, and past/present to entice the viewer/listener into the paradoxically immense spaces of his diminutive artwork.

In exhibiting work by six prolific veteran Creativity Explored artists, They are full of holy... at the Arc Gallery, showcases the dynamic artists working at CE.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Arc Gallery produced a catalog, which can be viewed here
