Three artists at Creativity Explored, in collaboration with one of their Visual Arts Instructors, blended their diverse cultural backgrounds and created an atavistic, magical, and primal “back to the Garden” in Elemental Renditions. Drawing, painting, textile, and ceramic artworks combine to forge a world of plants, animals, and people, set to the rhythm and patterns of everyday life. “The artworks are a beautiful expression of the artists’ respective roots in family, community and the natural world,” says Creativity Explored Visual Arts Instructor and curator Pilar Olabarria.

Many of artist José Nuñez’s figural works evoke a sense of iconic mysticism and communion with nature, rooted in childhood in his native El Salvador. In Anjeles Rosas, four robed angels with wings create a sacred atmosphere, as if they were performing a ritual. Honduran artist Mirian Munguia, in collaboration with Olabarria, designed the centerpiece of the exhibition, an elaborate, life-size Tree of Life tapestry installation made of layers of multicolored fabric leaves and flowers. Peter Cordova, originally from the Philippines, works in a bold, totemic style influenced by Native American art; his sculpture Head depicts the soulful expression of a man with oversized, thick features, oxblood skin, pale lips, and a silvery, mesh-like beard, embellished with carefully-incised circles on a hefty neck.

Don’t miss this captivating, folkloric-style exhibition reminiscent of Henri Rousseau, which harkens back to a simpler time when humans and animals lived more equally in the context of the natural world.

Curated by Pilar Olabarria.
