Miyuki Tsurukawa

Native San Francisco artist Miyuki Tsurukawa (b 1986) joined the Creativity Explored studio in 2008. Her work is characterized by an interpretation of different (and sometimes popular) forms, including birds, shoes, cupcakes, pigs and figures from movies and cartoons.  She seems inspired by Tim Burton themes (Frankenweenie, Nightmare Before Christmas) and often makes versions of some of the popular characters from those movies.

Tsurukawa works almost exclusively in ceramics, although she's adept at painting & drawing as well. Her two-dimensional work is characterized by bold depictions of birds and other animals against a vibrantly brushed background, highlighting her assured line and sense of proportion.

Tsurukawa’s ceramics have these same bold, impressive aspects. She makes sculptural portraits of characters, animals, and food items, as well as variously sized containers that are utilitarian and beautiful. Tsurukawa then painstakingly colors every feature of her ceramics, giving them the same life-like assurance of her paintings.

Tsurukawa has been featured in numerous exhibitions at Creativity Explored.
