Experimentations and explorations with color are a central concern in Patrick Ng’s paintings and collages. From large abstract paintings to small collages, Ng seeks to understand color both as a formal element and as an idea.
Early on at CE, Ng gravitated toward working at a large scale. His paintings are vibrant celebrations of bright linework and radiant shapes. At a more modest scale, he makes collages that feature small cut circles and squares colorized by hand. These assemblages are playful compositions in geometric form. More recently Ng has been attracted to wallpaper and consumer wall paint samples. In cutting up these swatches, he builds layered collages that reveal how color itself is named, catalogued and organized for everyday use.
Ng’s practice is defined by a driven and fast-paced creative state. Once he’s in the zone, Ng can create with irreproducible speed – mixing colors and adding layers before the paint is even dry.
