Benji Saechao-Cheung

b. 1995, San Francisco CE artist since 2022

Benji Saechao-Cheung's favorite part of making art is being able to show others his unique personality and his varied interests. He is constantly seeking inspiration from his visual surroundings: anime and comic books, famous paintings, movies, video games, and even architecture are frequent sources for him. In the studio, Saechao-Cheung is straightforward, precise, and methodical, ensuring his art turns out exactly how he wants it. He makes use of a broad range of materials in his practice, including oil pastels, Chinese ink, watercolor pens, colored pencils, and Sharpies. In the future, he wants to expand into animation, ceramics, and papier-mâché. "There’s nothing that can stop me from making art," he says.

When he's not engrossed in his work, you can find him checking in on others and making sure everyone has everything they need. Saechao-Cheung also enjoys learning about other cultures, being social, and traveling — "people say I'm a romantic at heart," he says. He speaks three languages: Iu Mien, Cantonese, and English, and wants to work at a museum as a docent. "I like Creativity Explored because it's so innovative and fantastically fun," Saechao-Cheung says. "There's a bigger space and I can bring out my creative spirit."
