Whipper Snapper Nerd, 1993 by John Patrick McKenzie (Issue #3), inspired the title of the zine series

Guest curators Harrell Fletcher and Elizabeth Meyer return to Creativity Explored to revisit their popular Whipper Snapper Nerd zine series.

Launched 25 years ago as a project to raise awareness of the lives and work of CE artists, Whipper Snapper Nerd is a self-published magazine or zine. Each issue is devoted to one artist and includes selections of their work and an interview.

The exhibition looks back at the original eight issues of the zine and celebrates two new ones devoted to current artists Christina Marie Fong and Gerald Wiggins. This retrospective coincides with a new book, featuring selections from all 10 issues of the zine produced to date.

Combining original artwork, zine excerpts, and videos created with CE artists, Whipper Snapper Nerd is not to be missed!

Featured artists include Barbara Doehrman, Christina Marie Fong, David Jarvey, Andrew Li, Michael Bernard Loggins, Robert Margolis, John Patrick McKenzie, James Miles, Diane Scaccalosi, and Gerald Wiggins.

Studio artists painting on fabric in the gallery during Tabula Rasa III

See the CE gallery transform into an active artmaking space this March!

Creativity Explored is proud to bring back Tabula Rasa for the third year in a row. Tabula Rasa III is a celebration of experimentation and collaboration around fashion. During this three-week interactive project, the CE gallery will serve as an expansion of the art studio in order to make the creative process center stage.

In preparation for Fabulate!, an exhibition devoted to the process of creating fashion opening at CE this fall, the gallery will temporarily transform into an atelier of sorts, where studio artists will experiment with pattern painting, textile manipulation, and other experimental adornments.

Stop by the gallery/studio each day to see what develops.  Beware as there may be a few impromptu project runways to show off the artists' fashions as they are made!

Facilitated by Kelley Kerslake and Victor Molina.

Curator and artist Yukari Sakura with a selection of works included in Nature Justice!

In concert with Tabula Rasa III, in which the gallery is devoted to studio activities for three weeks, we asked artist Yukari Sakura to curate a mini-exhibition in the CE studio for the same period of time.

Sakura reviewed her long list of "at-risk" animals and cross-referenced it with artworks produced by several fellow CE artists to create Nature Justice!, an installation that addresses environmental degradation, climate change, and endangered species. Sakura also painted the names of at-risk animals, flora, and fauna directly on the wall in popular protest fashion.

Artists include Lucinda Addison, Monica Barrera, Peter DeLira, Jesus Huezo, Lien Nguyen, Yukari Sakura, Rory White, Richard Wright, and Ann Yamasaki.

Untitled (9 Caballos) by José Nuñez © 2017 Creativity Explored Licensing, LLC, acrylic on paper, 40 x 60 inches

Creativity Explored is proud to present the first solo exhibition of work by José Nuñez.

The artist’s evocative drawings and lush paintings primarily focus on the flora and fauna of his native El Salvador. These diverse images from nature beautifully coexist alongside Nunez’ elegant figures, evoking old-world mysticism and peaceful beauty.

Los evocativos dibujos y lienzos de José estan primeramente enfocados en la flora y fauna de su native tierra, El Salvador. Todas ellas coexisten con las elegantes figuras, que nos llevan a un mundo místico y antiguo, lleno de una belleza sublime.
