Jack Fischer Gallery presents a solo exhibition of works on paper by Douglas Sheran.
Douglas Sheran worked at Creativity Explored from 1993 until 2008 where he would render his preferred subjects (figures and animals) in pencil, ink, pastels, acrylics, watercolors, and ceramics. Sheran’s drawings capture the strength and essence of the subject rather than the minute detail. He is able to employ a few lyrical lines to convey form and movement.
Playing with the human form, Sheran created a series of works in which he painted over female figures found in magazines. Gestural yet subdued, in each work, Sheran captures the shape of the female figure with minimal strokes.
Sheran also developed a suite of portraits of the crew of the Enterprise from Star Trek. These bold, graphic images suggests Andy Warhol’s silk screened grids of celebrities. Working in acrylic on sheets of acetate placed over reference images of the characters, Sheran arrived at an approximate yet expressive and singular version of each personage. These colorful images were then overlaid onto backgrounds of illustration board that the artist hand painted with washes of acrylic paint.
Selections from these bodies of work will be on view at the Jack Fischer Gallery April 8 to May 27, 2017. To see images, click here.
