Japanese Rock n' California Roll

April 1-2, 2003

Venue
Creativity Explored

Location
San Francisco, CA

Untitled by Junko Kamata

This month Creativity Explored of San Francisco and Creative Growth Art Center of Oakland host three visiting artists from Japan in their respective studios as part of a collaborative artmaking project. Both Creativity Explored and Creative Growth are non-profit art centers for artists with developmental disabilities.

Using art as a tool to communicate similarities and differences, the project will connect people with markedly different cultures, backgrounds and abilities.

Junko Kamata, Kenji Koyasu, and Etsuka Ishikura will work as visiting instructors at Creativity Explored and Oakland-based Creative Growth during March and April. Works created as part of the collaboration will be featured in April exhibitions at both centers’ galleries. The exhibitions will also include work by Kamata, Koyasu, and Ishikura, as well as works by artists with disabilities who have worked with them in Japan.

Japanese ROCK N’ California ROLL is curated by Masami Yamamoto, project coordinator.

This project is supported by J-Nexus, a grant program of Japan-US Community Education and Exchange, the Nippon Foundation, Nomura Cultural Foundation, Funabashi Civic Gallery, Matsuda Oil Colour Co, LTD, and the Association for Studying Contemporary Art.
