How to Make a Monster

October 28, 2017
1:00 to 4:00 pm

Venue
Creativity Explored

Location
3245 16th Street

Using the Exquisite Corpse method of creation, design, draw, and build a life-size monster!

The neck bone's connected to the head bone . . .

Creativity Explored 2 Studio Manager (and long-time classic horror film fan and collector) E. Francis Kohler will guide budding "Doctor" Frankensteins through a considerably less bloody version of making a monster (or two).

Using aspects of the Exquisite Corpse method -- each participant won't know, in detail, what the others are drawing -- we'll render various body parts in relative seclusion behind cardboard dividers.

When everyone is finished with their individual body fragment, we'll assemble all the disparate parts to create our "monster."

Photo opportunities with our creation -- It's alive! -- will follow.

Join us for the annual Lit Crawl!

Creativity Explored will be a featured venue for the annual Lit Crawl on October 14, 2017, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. One of the most anticipated literary nights of the year, San Francisco's Lit Crawl attracts close to 10,000 people, and is the world’s largest such event.

The Lit Crawl, which spans the Mission District's Valencia Street corridor, goes from 5:00 pm through 9:00 pm (with half hour gaps instead of fifteen minute gaps between phases, so 5-6 pm, 6.30-7.30 pm, 8-9 pm).

The fresh, colorful, surprising, and moving work of artists at Creativity Explored inspires The Writers Studio students. Hear Thomas Adams, Grace Chao, Eanlai Cronin, Meagan Douglas, Kim Huyhn, Manikya, Mohita Mohan, and Elizabeth Pohlman read in response.

Bride of Monster features wild and woolly new intepretations of female monsters.

Bride of Monster is a small-group exhibition featuring wild and woolly new interpretations of female monsters from film, folklore, and mythology.

Creativity Explored 2 Studio Manager E. Francis Kohler curated this exhibition, which he hopes will provoke thought about the historical relationship between representations of monsters and people with disabilities. Bride of Monster is a long-coming third installment of the 2003 exhibition, Monster, and two years later, Revenge of Monster. “It’s been 12 years, and I thought it might be kind of fun to revisit monsters and disability – this time, complicating the theme by adding the layer of women, another group that has been historically oppressed."

With works ranging from a series of repurposed mannequin heads to bold, graphic renderings of yōkai from Japanese folklore, Bride of Monster is a must-see this October.

Featured artists include Christina Marie FongThomas PringleYukari SakuraGerald Wiggins, and Richard Wright
