My, what an Exquisite Corpse you have.

In the Studio

My, what an Exquisite Corpse you have.

Artists from both CE studios are collaborating with artists from The Studio (Eureka,CA) and Art From the Heart (Portland, OR) on an air-mail version of the classic Surrealist method for creating spontaneous and unintended compositions known as the Exquisite Corpse.

The initial artist begins a drawing on the top third of a sheet of paper and then conceals most of it, the second collaborator continues the drawing from the barely revealed portion and then repeats the process for the final artist to finish. The results are often stunning, outlandish, and hilarious.

The pictorial version was developed after the original written method, which generated the famous sentence—“The exquisite corpse will drink the new wine.”—that gave the technique its name.

Above is a close-up of Beth Zmerzlikar in the corpse-making process, check out the Flickr link for photos of the artists and works-in-progress.
