Sounds of the Studio
In the Studio
Local musician Steve Dood came in to record the sounds of the artists at our 16th Street studio this week. What does the making of art sound like? He captured everything from artist Valerie Jenkins singing “Thriller” to the murmur of art being made - the scratch of pen onto linen and the rhythm of stones being arranged. The artists explained their artwork’s origins, tapped pens onto paper, spoke about the importance of Ferris wheels, and made percussive clicks while working. Woven into all of this were the sounds of an ordinary day in the studio: shaking paint pens, water running in the sink, laughter, grunts, chairs sliding, and an impromptu version of “Stairway To Heaven.”
Steve then uses these field recordings to arrange percussion parts and develop vocal melodies from the spoken or sung moments. These are integrated into compositions as loops and notes pulled from the art-making process recorded at CE. His results will be debuted in a sound piece performed at the opening of Repetition on April 30th.
