Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

Bertha, Selene, Jose, Lakeshia and I took off for a field trip to the Yerba Buena Center to see the big show featuring local Bay Area artists.

We left Creativity Explored early and YBCA doesn’t open til noon, so we treated ourselves with a visit to the Catherine Clark Gallery. At Catherine Clark we saw wonderful baroque paintings by Julie Heffernan. These paintings were complex fantasy images, somewhat disturbing. There were videos also by Adam Chapman –– videos in digital frames which we found kinda cool also.

We still had plenty of time so we had lunch in the shade near the meadow at the Yerba Buena Gardens. Afterwards, we explored the lovely pools above the big waterfalls nearby and were disappointed to find it without the birds we’d seen before playing and washing themselves. Too hot I guess. However, some kids were there and excited by the arrangement of water flowing over the stone and were playing their own games.

We settled under some small trees near the Zeum next to the small children’s play area and stayed cool and did some sketching. Lakeshia really took her time and developed her drawing.

Entering the YBCA building provided a cool relief from the outdoor heat. The show included drawing, painting, installation, photography, and video. Lakeshia found a video in which she could lie on her back on soft cushions looking up at the 4 × 4 foot image. I enjoyed the jokey “Everything is Better Now” video. Much fun.

We took the underground Muni at Market back to stay out of the heat and ensure seating.
