CE Teaching Artist Ester Hernandez in New York Times
Studio Artists & Staff News
Creativity Explored Teaching Artist Ester Hernandez was recently featured in a New York Times article detailing the renovation and reopening of El Museo del Barrio (NYC), a museum dedicated to the presentation and support of Latin-American art and artists in New York, and beyond. Her work has been acquired for its permanent collection.
Ester Hernandez is best known for her pastels, paintings, and prints of Chicana/Latina women. Her work reflects the political, social, ecological, and spiritual themes born from community pride, a commitment to political action, and an abiding sense of humor. Her 1981 screenprint “Sun Mad” is a famous example of her artwork’s combination of aesthetics and activism. She is a long-time member of Creativity Explored’s teaching staff, about which she says: “Working at Creativity Explored is: unique, inspiring, rewarding, informal, period.” The same can be said of Hernandez.
We’ve always known that her work was as wonderful as she is, and aren’t surprised that it has such resonance with so many other individuals and institutions, among which are: the permanent collections of the National Museum of American Art - Smithsonian, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Library of Congress, Cheech Marin, The Frida Kahlo Studio Museum in Mexico City, and now, El Museo del Barrio.
