Creativity Explored’s fundraising event, “San Francisco Notables” on Thursday, April 28 had the hip
111 Minna Gallery in downtown San Francisco packed with aficionados of outsider art and some very notable San Franciscans. The inimitable artists of Creativity Explored had created one-of-a-kind portraits of more than 30 notable San Franciscans from Mr. San Francisco Leather to Mayor Newsom which were sold that evening through a silent auction.
Local luminary and art supporter Matt Gonzales dropped in to take a look at the several portraits created of him. He loved them, but wondered why there seemed to be a couple of small horns painted onto his head in one of the pictures. Artist Gordon Chin explained, “It’s a joke.” Gonzales’ significant other immediately placed a bid on the picture.
DA Kamala Harris walked Gonzales over to her portrait by artist John Patrick McKenzie who creates text-based pictures in a distinctive handwriting. In it, McKenzie wrote standard nice things like “Kamala Harris is pretty” and “Kamala Harris is smart”. But the lines that had Harris laughing out loud were “Kamala Harris is meaner and stricter than Hallinan”, and the curious “Kamala Harris is culture humbug sexy.” No one is sure what ‘culture humbug sexy’ is, but everyone decided it was a great thing for a San Francisco DA to be!
Sergio Nibbi was also thrilled by the portrait that featured him with a nice thick head of hair. Nibbi and wife Karen made sure to place the winning bid on the picture. The Cowgirls of Novato (who earned a fair bit of notoriety in Marin by creating a somewhat risque’ calendar to support the Novato schools) showed up for the festivities as well, and in the spirit of San Francisco were presented with an adoption certificate by Pete Cling, Creativity Explored’s board president.
Comedian Will Durst provided the entertainment and had the crowd roaring with laughter in a set that touched on many of the Notables hanging on the walls of the gallery. Later that evening Will and wife Debi snapped up several portraits of friends like Robin Williams. Surprise musical guest Jonathan Richman finished off the evening with style and humor.
We thank all the Notables who support Creativity Explored and particpated by having their portraits created by studio artists! And thank you to all our supporters who attended the event and had a great time!
