CE pays tribute to Margarete Connolly
General News
Margarete Connolly, 92, a tireless advocate for people with developmental disabilities, passed away on April 28, 2003. Mayor Willie Brown of San Francisco said of Mrs. Connolly, “Margarete’s work on behalf of people with mental, emotional, and developmental problems was groundbreaking. She was absolutely critical in moving the state of California into a position to seriously address the needs of these people. The state of California is a better place because of Margarete, and untold numbers of children have gotten a better shot in life.”
Margarete’s advocacy work began in 1951 when her daughter Anne was born with a developmental disability. Since that date, she became a forceful and nationally recognized advocate for people with disabilities, serving on state and national boards, committees, and governing bodies. Margarete served on Creativity Explored’s Board of Directors for many years when the organization was founded twenty years ago. Her daughter Anne currently creates art in our studio.
All of us at Creativity Explored gratefully acknowledge a lifetime of work to better the quality of life of people with disabilities and mourn her passing. Her advocacy on behalf of people with disabilities affected the lives of many people and we thank her for her commitment and dedication.
