According to the Chinese zodiac calendar, the year 2010 is the year of the Tiger—one of the most energetic of the zodiac’s twelve animals. Tiger Leaping Gold Mountain will celebrate Chinese New Year in conjunction with the San Francisco Chinese community. It will also showcase works of art by artists of Chinese descent working at Creativity Explored and celebrate their heritage.

Early immigrants from China arrived around the time of the California Gold Rush, in search of both work and gold. These early immigrants called California “Gold Mountain” - 金 山, pinyin: Jin shan, also pronounced as Gum Shan. Today, within the Chinese community San Francisco is still referred to as the “Old Gold Mountain.”

Entertainment will be provided by the SFPD Lion Dance Team. The Lion Dance will be performed at 7:30 pm. Throughout the evening, Winnie Wong, Director of China’s Spirit Music Ensemble, will be playing the Guzheng - the chinese zither. You can learn more about this instrument here.

Some works from this show may be seen and purchased online through April 7, 2010. Please call for availability.
