Pink — not the most respected color on the spectrum, but certainly one of the most playful. It’s the creamy cuteness of bubble gum and Hello Kitty accessories as well as the rosy raunchiness of movies by John Waters and elephant hallucinations. Now more than 25 artists rethink pink in the exhibition “The Pink Show.” As described by curator and instructor Enrique Andrade, “Pink is easy to get into. I just put the color out on the table and suddenly there was pink in everything. Everyone is really enjoying the process of working seriously with a color that most people think is inherently silly.”

Participating artists include John Patrick McKenzie, who offers an ode to all things pink in a series of text-based drawings, and Marcus Cortez, who redefines macho with his paintings of pink motorcycles. One of the most enthusiastic participants is portrait artist Sara O’Sullivan who, picking up the pink triangle theme, is creating a spectacular series of drag queen portraits, including such luminaries as Kristy Kruise and the legendary Vicki Marlane. “I really want to meet them. I want them to do a show here,” says O’Sullivan, as she demonstrates a few dance moves herself.

“The Pink Show” opening reception will be attended by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, long time supporters of Creativity Explored, who will “bless” the exhibition.
