“Don’t Call Me Retard” will open at the Jewett Gallery in The San Francisco Main Public Library on Saturday, August 7, 2004. An opening reception will be held in the Jewett Gallery on Wednesday, August 11, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
“Don’t Call Me Retard”, featuring work by studio artists exploring what it means to have a disability, was originally exhibited in our gallery in October 2002. The exhibition has recently been expanded and includes new work by studio artists, as well as works from the Creativity Explored Steele Art Collection. Using a variety of media, including painting, drawing, installation, animation, and writing, artists respond to questions posed by CE teachers about living with a developmental disability. The responses are at times humorous, at times blunt, and invite the viewer to examine their perceptions of people with developmental disabilites. Exhibiting artists include Laron Bickerstaff, Thanh Diep, Camille Holvoet, Warren Jee, Michael Bernard Loggins, Gordon Shepard, and Ralph Russell.
The exhibition will close with an event to be held on October 13, 2004. Life Itself, a film by “Don’t Call Me Retard” curators Francis Kohler and Todd Herman, will screen at 5:30 pm. This documentary film offers a glimpse into the lives of three Creativity Explored artists: Michael Bernard Loggins, Allura Fong, and Sue Chan. Following the film screening, Michael Bernard Loggins, author of Fears of Your Life, will discuss his life and work with devorah major, San Francisco poet laureate.
