Loren King (b. 1944, Stockton, CA) joined the Creativity Explored in 1988. King is a versatile artist, often switching from drawing and painting media, to ceramics, to digital art.
King's early work is characterized by a thin loose line and whimsical figures composed of geometric shapes. A conscientious artist, King spends much time on each piece. He has a knack for capturing the essence of a subject in his expressive portraits.
For many years, King produced large-scale portraits on plywood cutouts using acrylic paints. These were exhibited at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and in a solo show at Dalva in San Francisco’s Mission District.
He recently transitioned from his more figurative work filled with big smiles, bright colors and animals to the more abstract “brain maps.” In this series, he carefully considers the colors, lines, and compositions that depict specific people’s brains. Loren King's "brain map" artworks made in collaboration with former Artist-in-Residence Julia Goodman are included in NextNewPaper on view at San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art June 5 through September 11, 2016.
