The Pink Show

Gallery Exhibition

More than 25 artists with developmental disabilities at San Francisco’s Creativity Explored Get Pretty Wild in Pink in the exhibition of their work “The Pink Show”

February 24 through April 7, 2005
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 24 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm

SAN FRANCISCO…Pink – not the most respected color on the spectrum, but certainly one of the most playful. It’s the creamy cuteness of bubble gum and Hello Kitty accessories as well as the rosy raunchiness of movies by John Waters and elephant hallucinations. Now more than 25 artists with developmental disabilities at Creativity Explored rethink pink in an exhibition entitled “The Pink Show” opening February 24, 2005 with a reception from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and continuing through April 7th. The gallery is open Monday through Friday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, and Saturday from 1:00 to 6:00 pm.

The idea for “The Pink Show” originated with curator and instructor Enrique Andrade, who explains, “Pink is easy to get into. I just put the color out on the table and suddenly there was pink in everything. Everyone is really enjoying the process of working seriously with a color that most people think is inherently silly.” Participating artists include John Patrick McKenzie who offers an ode to all things pink in a series of text-based drawings, while Marcus Cortez redefines macho with his paintings of pink motorcycles.

One of the most enthusiastic participants is portrait artist Sara O’Sullivan who, picking up the pink triangle theme, is creating a spectacular series of drag queen portraits. O’Sullivan downloaded photographs of San Francisco’s most famous drag divas including such luminaries as Kristy Kruise and the legendary Vicki Marlane in order to create the portraits. “I really want to meet them. I want them to do a show here,” says O’Sullivan, as she demonstrates a few dance moves herself. Who she will meet for sure are many of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, long time supporters of Creativity Explored. The Sisters plan to attend the opening reception and “bless” the exhibition.
