It’s Our Twentieth Birthday!

Director’s Corner

…And what better time to reflect on not only how much we’ve grown in the past two decades but on how lucky we’ve been. I continue to be floored and humbled by the dedication I’ve seen in this community — Creativity Explored could never be the wondrous place it is today without the extraordinary work of the artists, staff, volunteers, and our patrons.

Thanks to this type of support, we’ve grown from a small group of artists and instructors to a force in the art world. We’ve continued to push boundaries with shows like October’s “Don’t Call Me Retard,” in which member artists conveyed through art how people with disabilities experience the world. We’ve expanded into two centers and have been able to widen our artists’ options by offering computer and animation programs.

The diverse themes of our openings — such as “Lit”, our first functional art show - continue to bring patrons out in droves. Our website will be relaunched in March, giving us the ability to exhibit and sell to a larger audience. We’ve even expanded internationally — this year, we will be again be collaborating with artists with disabilities and visiting instructors from Japan for an upcoming show in April.

Your support is vital for our existence. As you are aware, California is facing a serious budget deficit and programs serving people with disabilities will likely sustain substantial cuts. At this point, we do not know how the cuts will affect Creativity Explored, but what we do know is that we will have to keep creatively fundraising in order to maintain a quality program. We encourage everyone to write their local legislator on our behalf.

Again, we appreciate your continued support and patronage in the tight years that lie ahead. It is what enables us to continue making disability a part of the diverse art community we are so proud of in the Bay Area.
