Untitled (collaborative artwork) by Claus Groeger, Corine Raper, and Hung Kei Shiu © 2017 Creativity Explored Licensing, LLC, mixed media, 23 x 24.5 inches

An exhibition exploring mark making as a visual language by nonverbal artists, Claus Groeger, Corine Raper, and Hung Kei Shiu.

FULL STOP! is an exploration of the ways three artists use mark making to experiment, communicate vision, and collaborate. This exhibition of work by Claus GroegerCorine Raper, and Hung Kei Shiu features diverse techniques of line making and deliberate gestural abstraction.

All three artists are, for the most part, nonverbal, and use mark making as a mode of expression. Visual Arts instructor and Co-Curator, Hannah Grace Lilly remarks, “there is something so quiet about the three artists, but something so incredibly loud about their artwork.”

The artists’ respective methods may appear as an impulsive mark, but upon closer examination they demonstrate a deep understanding of composition, color, and movement. For example, Groeger’s lines often flow off the paper functioning as an extension of his curiosity, while Raper keeps her gestural line work within the boundaries of the page serving as a reflection of her concentration. In contrast, Shiu delicately crafts dreamy colored fields of line work into assembled patterns.

Sutro Tower by Lance Rivers © 2016 Creativity Explored Licensing, LLC, mixed media on paper, 15 x 22.5 inches

Lance Rivers' first solo exhibition at Creativity Explored sheds light on his prolific career as an artist living in the Bay Area. The skilled draftsman offers a personal vision of regional bridges, buildings, tunnels, and BART stations imbued with loving attention to detail and an uncanny spatial presence.

Rivers documents the ever-changing physicality of San Francisco and the East Bay on his own terms, leaving the viewer to question whose vision is being built around us.  Rivers' work provides a unique perspective of the transitional flux the Bay Area has continuously undergone and continues to grapple with. On the occasion of his 50th birthday, Rivers reimagines the region through the eyes of an artist who is deeply invested and connected to our changing landscapes.
