The Crew by Gerald Wiggins © 2011 Creativity Explored.

A motley crew of ceramics from the studio.

According to Horace Washington, sculptor and curator of Hands on Clay, there are two types of artists in this world: those who like to get their hands dirty and those who do not. This imaginative exhibition showcases the work of a dozen Creativity Explored artists who dive into projects hands first, creating clay works that are anything but ordinary. Monster masks, demonic cupcakes, flying dragons, Eastern deities and spirited mammals from lands real and fantastical — this otherworldly show will entertain and illustrate the power of two hands (on clay).

The wonderful thing about sculptural works is that they beg viewers to envision the process by which they were constructed. Unlike two-dimensional pieces, art objects with depth are almost irresistible to reach out and touch, and they certainly have a more human presence due to their obvious handwork and extradimension. Hands On Clay is a show that aims to highlight the process of art making — a ceramic wheel and slab roller used by many students occupies the window display area of Creativity Explored Gallery — so even before you see a collection of impressive works, you see the tools used to make them.

Three Forms

September 8 - October 8, 2011

Venue
Ampersand International Arts

Location
San Francisco, CA

Untitled by Evelyn Reyes © 2003 Creativity Explored.
Oil pastel on paper.

Curated by Patricia Maloney, Three Forms at Ampersand International Arts, joins CE studio artist Evelyn Reyes' works on paper with Sol LeWitt's prints and sculpture by Jeff Jamieson.

Three Forms explores these artists’ systematic adherence to a form or gesture and the visual cadences they produce in allowing color to be the variable within their equations. Repetition does not lead to stasis or inertia; rather, it expands the work rhythmically so that pattern and shape amplify across the space of a room. The abstracted individual forms or lines combine into sequences that operate both linguistically and structurally; meaning evolves from recognizing the syntax the artists employ.
