SFAC Galleries presents Sugar Circus, a two-person exhibition by Camille Holvoet and Yukari Sakura.

Camille Holvoet is San Francisco native who joined the Creativity Explored studio in 2001. Deceptively sweet like her work, Holvoet’s practice tends to draw on remembrances of life’s anxieties and forbidden desires.

Holvoet’s process is an endless discovery, in which – through repeatedly drawing in oil pastel her sacred objects: dessert, Ferris Wheels, and crossed eyes – the pressures of the past are relieved by the joy of the creative process. When Holvoet combines text with imagery, the resonance between the two is powerful. Her beautiful, vibrant renderings of cakes and pies are often overwritten with recollections of nightmares, fears, frustrated sexual feelings, and religious doubt. The artist also often includes herself in portraits of personally influential people from her past, such as Andrew and Camille which is a loving portrait of Holvoet and her former therapist. Holvoet’s artwork has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.

Yukari Sakura works with great focus on what she calls her “very own stories,” gathering inspiration from mythological tales, animated films, and video games. Sakura works primarily with watercolor, colored pencils, and paint, rendering graphic illustrations of these characters with vibrantly colored accessories. The artist also pays homage to prominent cultural icons and historical events in very unexpected ways. For example, upon first glance, what looks like a set of delicious puff pastries actually depicts Baby Sea Lion Éclair Pups Cream Puffs made in dedication to the plight of this endangered species. Similarly, D.L. Vader Skywalker’s Chocolate Fudge Star Cake shows us how a traditional cake can transform into a cultural icon. Sakura’s paintings have been featured in numerous local and national exhibitions.

This exhibition is presented with support from Patina Restaurant Group and C + M (Coffee and Milk) War Memorial.

SFAC @ C+M is an exhibition series organized by SFAC Galleries at C+M War Memorial, a cafe located on the ground floor of the War Memorial Veterans Building. The location of C+M is also the site of the former SFAC Galleries, from 1996-2013.
