On Wednesday, April 5, 2017, Creativity Explored artists Joseph “JD” Green, Brian Hayes, and Joseph Omolayole celebrated the close of a project they did with Visual Arts Instructor Danielle Wright in which each artist drew or painted portraits of African American women, a joint celebration of Black Hisotry Month in Febraury, and Women’s History Month in March.
Green highlighted artist Faith Ringold, known for her narrative quilts. Wright pointed out her portrait of Nina Simone whose music often plays during CE’s weekly dance parties.
With each portrait, artists wrote short biographical sketches indicating why the subject was chosen. Guest artist Michael Napper remarked that the inclusion of biographical information enhances the power of the project by sparking intellectual curiosity.
Visual Arts Instructor Leeza Doreian praised Green, Hayes, Omolayole, and Wright for the deep emotional impact their project achieves, both because of the histories it honors and because of the careful sensitivity shown in each artwork.
