Loren King pelican portrait inspired a poem by Lincoln Bergman

Posted on February 17, 2015

Bay Area poet, Lincoln Bergman, participated in a poetry benefit for Creativity Explored on February 1, 2015 titled Ekphrastically yours. All of the poems read during the event were inspired by a Creativity Explored artwork which the participating poets personally selected.

Creativity Explored artist Loren King's ink and watercolor on paper, Untitled (Pelican), 2014, inspired the following poem by Lincoln Bergman. Click here to view King's Untitled (Pelican), 2014, on our Web Store.

Pelican Poem
Inspired by a portrait of a pelican by Loren King

I’m here to gift you a pelican poem
My words, like the bird, are likely to roam
Over the ocean—out past Alcatraz
Hopefully a little poetic pizzazz

And the reason I mentioned Alcatraz isle
That Native folks once took over in style
Is that Alcatraz derives from the Arabic word
For a diving, fish-eating, pelican bird!

                       ******

I love this pelican
With high-heeled shoes—
It brings a smile
To banish the blues!

Striped sneakers and socks I thought at first look
But then I saw that I might have mistook
When I saw in fact high heels they might be
I was called on to spout some peli-poetry!

What if I were a peli-man?
Or a peli-dame—
With fancy shoes I’d fly over town
Garner lots of peli-fame!

There are said to be eight species
Fishing talents multi-various
Fly where they wish, dive for a fish
Described as quite socially gregarious!

They hunt cooperatively
Establish breeding colonies
They travel in flocks
Though without shoes and socks

Oh the places
Where imagination can carry us
From the sublime
To the hilarious!

                       ******

I am a pelican
Soaring above
I am a pelican
Sharing the love!

Of breezes and billows
Great waves and tide
Seeking out places
Where delicious fish hide

But much more than that
Here’s the good news
I am a pelican
Wearing cool high-heeled shoes.

And I’m created by
Artist Loren King
Cheered by the smiles
His pelican brings.

Loren and me
When truth be told
Found out that we’ve both
Just turned seventy years old.

Aging can be hard
But we’ll try not to lose
Loren’s vision of a pelican
With striped high-heel shoes!

And the many tiny marks
Etched into his work
Could be minutes, days, or years,
Or just artistic quirk.

I also like the subtle look
On the pelican’s face
Planning soon to take off
Rise up into space.

I am a pelican
Soaring above
I am a pelican
Sharing the love!
