Announcing the 2016 exhibition schedule

Posted on February 2, 2016

We are thrilled to announce the 2016 exhibition schedule!

Main Gallery Exhibition Schedule

Andrew Li
January 14 – February 24, 2016
Curated by Gilles Combet

In this solo exhibition of drawings and paintings by Andrew Li (b. 1965), the artist’s energetic line translates favorite subjects (cityscapes, transportation, animals, and groups of people) into wholly unique, yet integrated urban scenes.

Li’s work been exhibited nationally and internationally, but this will be the first large-scale show devoted to Li in San Francisco.

Tabula Rasa
March 3 – April 13, 2016
Curated by Paul Moshammer

The Creativity Explored Gallery will serve as an expansion of the studio during this six-week-long interactive project. See the Gallery transform into an active art-making space as artists, art instructors, and possibly even visitors create two and three-dimensional artworks in the space traditionally reserved for “finished” work.

Due to the experimental format of this exhibition, there will be a closing reception to showcase the work created instead of a traditional opening reception.

Quality of Line:  Charles Cruz and Jay Herndon
April 21 – June 1, 2016
Curated by E. Francis Kohler

This two-person exhibition of work by Charles Cruz and Jay Herndon features diverse techniques of line-making coupled with gestural, and often unconfined, sections of color.

Artists Herndon and Cruz have developed unique styles of mark-making that reveal the way in which things are constructed, formally as well as anatomically. While Herndon's forms frequently suggest faceted or multi-planed objects (literally so in his three dimensional mask), Cruz's work tends toward masses of overlapping curlicues and scalloped line forms.

The artists’ respective techniques may appear casual or erratic at first glance, but upon closer examination, they demonstrate a confident sense of touch in response to the subject at hand, whether it is a person, place, or imaginary beast.

Ripe
June 9 – July 20, 2016
Curated by Veronica Graham and Danielle Wright

In this group exhibition, Creativity Explored artists dig into one of life's most luscious subjects: food. As acclaimed writer Beth Lisick notes in her Tell You What series, [if] I were to make a pie chart about conversation topics at Creativity Explored, nearly half of that pie would be about food.”

CE Studio artists examine the rich history of cuisines from all over the world, exploring a smorgasbord of related subtopics from the ritual and symbolism of a particular meal to how what we consume impacts our cultural identities and our environment. The egalitarian nature of the subject matter aims to connect us all, regardless of ability and disability, ethnicity, gender, and creed.

Shapeshifting
July 28 – September 7, 2016
Curated by Geri Montano

This two-person exhibition of artwork by Evelyn Reyes and Yolanda Ramirez explores the transformation of shapes in a variety of colors and media.

Reyes works almost exclusively in the medium of oil pastel on paper. Her highly abstracted Carrots are a favorite theme. Perhaps inspired by her fellow artist, Ramirez also draws simple domestic subjects in colored pencil and graphite, but her style is less abstract and more stylized.

Both artists have been working at Creativity Explored for over 20 years.

Natural History
September 15 – October 26, 2016
Curated by Andrew Gilson and Glenn Peckman

In this group exhibition, the gallery will transform into a miniature museum of natural history. Artists will explore astronomy, geology, prehistoric history, and flora and fauna using a range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, video/animation, and diorama installations.

Many natural history display techniques will be appropriated to create a view of the natural world as seen through Creativity Explored artists’ eyes.

Trading Spaces: Creativity Explored Staff Exhibition
November 3 – November 20, 2016

An exhibition of work by over two dozen Creativity Explored staff members.

This two-week group display provides a unique opportunity for the community (and Creativity Explored artists) to go behind the scenes and view the amazing range of artwork made by the talented Bay Area artists who teach and support Creativity Explored artists.

Annual Holiday Art Sale
December 1 – 31, 2016

During this not-to-be-missed annual holiday art sale, Creativity Explored’s studio and gallery will be filled with original art prints, paintings, drawings, ceramics, sculptures, and textiles by over 135 artists.
