Creativity Explored

Evelyn Reyes

Evelyn Reyes (b. 1957) joined the Creativity Explored studio in 2002. Reyes exclusively creates series of works of repeated abstract shapes in oil pastel on paper. Working on one specific shape at a time, her periods of abstract depictions include cakes, garbage cans, and, currently, carrots.

Reyes’ art practice mirrors the repetition and order that are central to her daily life. Reverence for each aspect of the process defines her art practice. It begins with the selection of a piece of specifically sized paper. Next, the particular shade of oil pastel is chosen, the forms outlined then filled with a thick impasto. The finished piece is carefully examined, cradled in her arms, and taken to certain cardinal points in the studio. And finally, there is the ceremonial clean up and storing away of the completed work.

CB2 chose Reyes' carrots as the basis for two pillow designs and COMME des GARÇONS selected Reyes' work for three t-shirts in 2013.

Reyes’ work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Her work was featured in several prominent exhibitions including Create, a traveling exhibition curated by Lawrence Rinder that originated at University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive in 2011, Outside In: The Art of Inclusion, at the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork, Ireland in 2013, Three Forms, at Ampersand International Arts, San Francisco, CA, and The Museum of Everything: Exhibition #4, Selfridges, London, UK, in 2011, and Paper!Awesome!, at Baer Ridgeway Exhibitions, San Francisco, CA in 2010.

Reyes' work is included in the permanent collections of Le MADmusée, Liège, Belgium and the University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley, California.

In 2015, Reyes' artworks Three Black Carrots, 2009, Three Orange Carrots, 2012 and Three White Carrots, 2015, oil pastel on paper, 11.5 x 17 inches (each), were selected as winning artworks in the Big-i Art Project's fifth open call.

On October 20, 2016 Evelyn Reyes was featured in a Brut Force review by Gabriella Angeleti titled, “Connection to Art through the Creation Process for Three Self-Taught Artists.” Angeleti chronicles Reyes art practice and focuses on her methods of making at Creativity Explored. Reyes was also featured in an article by Sophia Cosmadopoulos in Savant Garde on May 11, 2015. In the article titled "Life's a Bunch of Carrots: The Life and Habits of Evelyn Reyes," Cosmadopoulos records Reyes' ritual art making process.
