Born in 1947 in Price, Utah, Beth Zmerzlikar has been making art in both the 16th Street and Arkansas Street studios since 2007.
Zmerzlikar’s process is one of layers deposited in methodical, overlapping folds of pastel or ink, and can be either figurative or abstract. Controlled lateral markings carefully fill the striations, where they meet creates wavering bands of darker shades reminiscent of sedimentary material laid down in geologic time. The effect lends her work movement and dynamism as the color of the ground can be seen between these vigorous marks and the energy of her hand can be felt moving through the surface.
