Douglas Sheran was born in California in 1941. Douglas worked in our studios until mid-2008.
Sheran has periods when he is a prolific artist, creating many pieces of art in a week. His subject matter is typically figures or animals. He enjoys working in pencil, ink, pastels, acrylics, watercolors, and ceramics. Sheran makes a banjo type noise or song throughout the day while working. His song was captured in an animated work that combined his ink drawings with his melodic hum. Sheran’s drawings capture the strength and essence of the subject rather than the minute detail. He is able to employ a few lyrical lines to convey form and movement. CB2, one of our community arts partners, chose Sheran’s drawing of a bird to embellish a pillow that they began producing in 2010.
Sheran lives in a group home in San Francisco. He is a quiet person who spends hours perusing books and magazines. Sheran is fascinated by magnets and spends considerable time testing a magnet’s effect on tools, bottle caps, wires and metal table legs. Using string, wire and tennis balls, he also experiments with movement and tension. These experiments were often conducted in the art studio during his breaks from making art.
